The minister of Education and Sports, First lady of Uganda, the wife to Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of Uganda, Janet Kataha Museveni has strongly ordered all arts teachers to immediately halt their strike and get back to work to avoid unnecessary serious action to be taken by the government against them. The minister accused the striking teachers of being selfish by not reporting to duty.
The minister also petitioned the striking teachers to get involved in piggery and poultry farming to supplement their income instead of wanting to make a living out of teaching. She also tasked the teachers to teach based on their terms (Ministry of Education and Sports). She also said she and her husband gets only Ugx 3M but they don't complain and yet they are contented with their 3M Ugx.
"What sort of professionals are they? You have betrayed Ugandans. You are not in the teaching profession to make a living out of it. You have to set up other ventures like piggery and poultry . If you are recruited to teach, work on our terms. My husband sacrificed himself for this country but he is not complaining yet he gets only Ugx 3M. We are all poor but contented". Recently, the Ugandan government increased the salary for science teachers and left their arts counterparts without salary increments. This angered arts teacher all over the country which led to the current strike all over all schools in Uganda.
