Makerere Vice Chancellor Suspends NUP's Guild Aspirants

Makerere University has suspended four students belonging to the National Unity Platform-NUP party for allegedly holding a demonstration at Freedom Square last Friday. The affected students are Mwesigwa Calvin Mugambwa, Bbosa Edwin Price, and Katushabe Kenneth who are vying for the NUP party ticket to run for the Makerere University guild presidential seat. In his June 27th suspension letter, Makerere University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe accuses the students of engaging in acts of demonstration when they organized a NUP Makerere Chapter General Assembly on July 24th, at which the respective aspiring candidates were expected to address fellow students.

H.E Bobi Wine on his reaction condemned the unlawful suspension of the Nup's aspirants and pledged that Nup's lawyers are in ground to make sure the matter is brought to book. "I am shocked by the information coming from Makerere University indicating that its administration has arbitrarily suspended 3 students who are vying to contest for Guild presidency on the NUP ticket. 

The students — Mwesigwa Calvin Mugambwa, Bbosa Edwin Price, and Katushabe Kenneth — have been suspended ostensibly on account of a students' assembly they attended last Friday; an act the University claims is unlawful.It is evident that the students' suspension is part of a wider scheme by the regime, acting through its functionaries within Makerere's administration, to clamp down on otherwise lawful student activity that it considers a threat to its existence. Our legal team is already engaged to challenge this latest affront to academic freedom!", Said Bobi Wine.

A one Gordon Ssewungu was quoted "This man, Gordon Murangira, the personal assistant to Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe is the scout behind the witch hunt on NUP students. Whereas he is an academician, he is said to be armed and usually draws his pistol at students suspected to be NUP and opposition leaning. The Ntungamo born is very hateful towards the people of Buganda and most times he is heard labeling NUP as a Buganda party. Sometimes he even scoffs at Baganda staff in the university. In October 2019, Gordon Murangira conspired with a one Musa, a GISO in Makerere to abduct and rape Siperia Mollie, a student of psychology who fled to exile in Kenya. He is also a prime suspect in the September 2020 Makerere inferno that razed down the iconic Ivory Tower building!"
